Ahh, the blessings in life. This time the computer I was assigned at this place is not only at normal height but by an open door where the breeze is blowing in. It's been hot here. Now, the shade, the breeze, even sitting down. Ahhh. I ask only for a good lunch today before I board the train then bus then train to go through Grenoble towards Montdauphin, somewhere in the French Alps, where I will vacation with my sister Henrie and her extended French family.
OK. First: playcount. The Festival and all the theaters only opened 3 days ago, on Thursday. All the plays that night were free. But I went to Mary Ann's house (my boss) for a late dinner, so nothing then. Friday a day in the bus for field trips. Saturday, a group of us walked the two bridges to Ville Neuve where Alyssa and I had stayed at the YMCA hostel 3 weeks ago. (We missed the flea market there. I bought presents for you family--22 old porcelain fèves to use in your Epiphany cakes. That accent easy on a French keyboard.)
So if you are tracking this convoluted story, I had late Friday, Saturday evening and night, and Sunday after lunch for theater time. I went to 7 plays.
Each theater features a series of different plays, sometimes beginning at 11:00 AM and continuing till about 23:00. This series is repeated most nights. So your method to choose a play can vary.
1. The timid orieteerers--Stick with a theater you like
2. The bold and confident--Find specific venues for a specific play (theaters down every "rouelle" /alley )
3. The Margie method--Wander the streets at random and check out what's playing when you see long lines.
But in the end, Avignon is most fun for me because I get to hang out with the NEH teachers. A play is about talking about it afterwards with someone. And we've had hours on walks, at sidewalk cafes, in their rooms at the Residence, just talking shop. This weekend, I had a run of Ionescos and you will agree, he is discussable for days.
Thanks for sharing a page from your blog, Marjorie; you catch the cadence of life (both frenetic and at the same time strangely languid) of Avignon at this time of year. It was such a treat to get to meet you. Safe travels!
